TORO is an outdoor chair line designed with the negative spaces in mind. Celebrating the shapes and resulting shadows created between the material structure. The initial goal of the design brief was to create an inviting chair with a unique personality and airy quality that provided a cooling sit for a hot summer day. As the form studies evolved a unique geometric aesthetic was uncovered which feels reminiscent of a glacier’s faceted ice faces and open crevasses. And what is more cooling on a hot summer day then sheets of ice?
TORO’s namesake was borrowed from The Gran Glaciar Norte located on Pico de Orizaba which is the highest point in Mexico. There is something awe-inspiring about such a prominent ice cap protruding from an otherwise tropical climate. The Gran Glaciar Norte is divided into eight different glacial tongues, with the Toro glacier tongue being to the northwest of the peak. Toro (Spanish for bull) seemed fitting given the chair frame’s squatty and bullish stance. Much like how the peak of Pico de Orizaba has been softened from years of glacier erosion the vertexes of TORO have been rounded to help create a more inviting and friendly form factor.
TORO is available in a stackable dining chair configuration as well as a low lounger. The frame is constructed with CNC bent aluminum tubing and features a durable powder coat finish. The seat and backrest are created with exterior rated fiber cording which could also be enhanced with a separate cushion if so desired.
